Student protests: truth about accident and punishment for attackers of peaceful protesters demanded

December 17, 2024

Students of around 40 faculties in Serbia joined mass street protests three weeks ago demanding the truth be revealed about the 1st November accident in Novi Sad that saw 15 people die when a railway station canopy collapsed.

The train station had been previously renovated and ceremonially opened in the presence of top state officials. The Serbian public believes that corruption resulted in substandard works being carried out, which led to deaths and injuries.

Students also began blocking faculties in response to attacks against street protestors by supporter and hooligan groups, which had been organised by representatives of the government.

The student protest in front of national broadcaster Radio-Television Serbia was directly prompted by the false accusations of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who claimed during a public service broadcast that the students had been paid to protest.

President Vučić subsequently stated that all student demands had been met, but the students themselves consider this claim to be false and have continued their protests nationwide across Serbia. The students have since been joined by their professors, as well as secondary school pupils and teachers.
