Serbian President Vučić threatens prosecutor who “refused to arrest journalists of ‘blockading media’”

April 16, 2025

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced, in his own words, a “crackdown” on independent journalists in Serbia, stating that he will “personally file a criminal complaint against the prosecutor who refused to arrest journalists from the blockading media”.

“Blockading media” is the name that has been given to media outlets that report on student protests and college blockades in a professional way.

“I will personally file a complaint against that prosecutor. Let’s see then if they reject the complaint and say I’m crazy, and he’s smart for effusing to prosecute journalists from blockading media,” said Vučić on 11th April.

Apart from the aforementioned prosecutor and journalists, Vučić also announced that the dean of the Faculty of Economics and the rector of the University of Belgrade, the country’s largest higher education institution, will also be brought before the court on charges of supporting the students who block college classes.
